The Seventh Commandment
Hadawar hashewii הדּבר השׁביעי
Thou shalt not commit adultery. (2M 20:14 (12))
Question: What does the seventh commandment order us?
Answer:
The seventh commandment forbids us:
1. Zenut זנוּת - sexual intercourse between persons of different gender who are not in an official partnership.
2. Neuf נאוּף - infidelity of persons who live in the partnership.
3. Arajot עריוֹת - sexual intercourse and partnership between people who are in the same family.
Question: How we can avoid these sins?
Answer:
It is necessary to avoid that can arouse impure emotions in the heart, such as: lascivious songs, indecent games and jokes, obscene spectacles, reading of harmful books, excessive consumption of alcohol etc.
Here are passages of Holy Scripture that confirm the seventh commandment:
And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, both the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death. (3M 20:10)
There shall be no harlot among the daughters of Israel, neither shall there be a sodomite among the sons of Israel. (5M 23:18)
None of you shall approach any that is near of kin to him, to uncover their nakedness. I am יהוה. (3M 18: 6)
Or can one walk upon hot coals, and his feet not be scorched? So he that goeth in to his neighbour's wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not go unpunished. (Proverbs 6: 28-29)
