About prayer

Al haTefila  ﬠַל הַתְּפִלָּה

The second commandment requires us to pray to God, and for this reason we will talk about prayer in this section.

Is necessary to have a special place for prayer?

Briefly we can say, it is not necessary to have a special place for prayer; because prayer can be said in anyplace, as it is written:

In every place where I cause My Name to be mentioned I will come unto thee and bless thee. (2M 20:20(24))

But because we know that God commanded us through Moses to make the Tent of Meeting מִשְׁכָּן Mishkan, and that King Solomon commanded us to build a temple for God where the public worship, the Karaites also (in similar way to people of other religions) perform our worship at special places of worship; we call this special place of public worship the kenasa (synagogue)  בֵּית הַכְּנֶסֶת Beit hakneset

Our teachers say that public worship has priority over the personal prayer, because public worship enhances the prayers and also integrates and incorporates the individual person within the bounds of collective prayers and also demonstrates the greatness of God.

But it is not necessary to have a special place or time for prayer. It is essential to pray wherever we are, otherwise some people would never be able to find a suitable place and time for prayer.

Therefore our teachers appointed these obligatory prayers:

Morning Prayer
תְּפִלַּת בֹּקֶר Tefila boker and evening prayer תְּפִלַּת עֶרֶב Tefila Erev.

In addition to these prayers it is an obligation to read short prayers - blessings, such as the prayer before sleeping
Brakha lifnei hashena, the prayer before eating Brakha lifnei haakhila, the prayer after eating בִּרְכַת הַמָּזוֹן Birkhat hamazon, the prayer before learning Brakha lifnei halimud, the prayer after learning Brakha akhar halimud and various others. ¹)

¹) The most important short prayers will be placed at the end of this book

We have two kinds of prayers:

The individual prayer Tefila yakhid
תְּפִלַּת יָחִיד, which a person prays alone.

The public or collective prayer Tefila tzibur
תְּפִלַּת צִבּוּר, which several people pray at once.

According to our teachers of faith, the collective prayer takes place if ten or more people participate in it. This amount of people is known as Minyan

Our teachers of faith compiled prayers of two kinds: individual

All our prayers are contained in the prayer books - Sidurs Sidurim
סִדּוּרִים, which consist of three parts, and which determine the sequence of prayers for each day.
During prayer it is required to pray with our face to Jerusalem, according to the prophet Daniel, who prayed in this direction, as it is written:

And when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house -now his windows were open in his upper chamber toward Jerusalem. (Dan 6:11)
