About the duties that are commanded in the Holy Law

Al mitzvot haTora  על מצוֹת התּוֹרה

The Holy Law תּוֹרה contains regulations and prohibitions.

The Holy Law contains laws for all parts of life which includes:

Religious laws that define the relations and duties of humans towards God - מִצְוֹת שֶׁבֵּין אָדָם לֵאלֹהָיו Mitzvot shebein adam leElohav.

Criminal laws and civil laws that define the relations and duties of humans towards himself - מִצְוֹת שֶׁבֵּין אָדָם לעַצְמוֹ Mitzvot shebein adam latzmo and to other people - מִצְוֹת שֶׁבֵּין אָדָם לַחֲבֵרוֹ Mitzvot shebein adam lakhavero.

The target of all these regulations is only to benefit humankind, this means that it shows humans the way that can help him/her to live a happy life, and also to reach his personal goals and mission.

The regulations are divided into:

Regulations (orders, commands) מִצְוַת עֲשֵׂה Mitzvat ase  - an instruction to fulfil the prescribed regulation, for example:

Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread. (2M 12:15)

Prohibitions מִצְוַת לֹא תַעֲשֶׂה Mitzvat lo taase - an order not to be done, forbidden, for example:

Thou shalt not plow with an ox and an ass together. (5M 22:10)

Instructions that are not the regulations nor theprohibitions, these instruction are known as permissions Reshut רְשׁוּת, for example:

Notwithstanding thou mayest kill and eat flesh within all thy gates, after all the desire of thy soul. (5M 12:15)

Each regulation and each prohibition leads to the benefit of the humans who abide by the regulation or prohibition, or to the benefit of all humankind. There is no commandment that hasn't got a reason or a purpose. But the Law does not always clarify the reason or purpose for each individual regulation or prohibition, for example:

Thou shalt not wear a mingled stuff (shaatnez), wool and linen together. (5M 22:11)

But we are always obliged to believe and be persuaded that every regulation and prohibition is intended for our benefit as it is written:

Ye shall therefore keep My statutes, and Mine ordinances, which if a man do, he shall live by them: I am the YHWH. (3M 18:5)
