About the obligation to study the Torah and about the obligation to learn the holy Hebrew language

Al khovat limud haTora uleshonah hakedosha

על חוֹבת למּוּד התּוֹרה וּלשׁוֹנהּ הקּדוֹשׁה

The Law of Moses orders to anyone who follows it: to study and understand the Law.

The law was written and given to Moses and our ancestors in Biblical Hebrew, in the language which we refer to as the holy language leshon hakodesh לשׁוֹן הקּדשׁ. An accurate and correct understanding of the law as well as understanding of prayers requires knowledge of the holy language (because both the Law and the prayers are read in biblical Hebrew). Therefore, our teachers ordained it as an obligation to study and be familiar with the holy language, including grammar, at least in the extent that each karaite should be able to read, understand and explain the Holy Scriptures and Karaite prayers.

The above statements are confirmed by the following passages of Holy Scripture:

And Moses called unto all Israel, and said unto them: Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the ordinances which I speak in your ears this day, that ye may learn them, and observe to do them. (5M 5:1)

And ye shall teach them your children, talking of them, when thou sittest in thy house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. (5M 11:19)

And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thy house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. (5M 6:7)

This book of the Law shall not depart out of thy mouth, but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein; for then thou shalt make thy ways prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. (Joshua 1:8)
